Northern Italian cuisine is hailed as some of the most delicious in the world, but if you don’t have time to cross an ocean in an evening, you can find the same fare as close as Chestnut Street. Le Castagne, which means "chestnut" in Italian, is a nod to this landmark street in Philadelphia, once lined with trees of the same name. The menu may look familiar, but don’t judge this book by its cover, because some of its unique dishes are a different story. With a 30-year history of excellence under its belt, including restaurants La Famiglia and Panorama, the Sena family breathes new life and vibrant taste into more traditional dishes of hand-made pasta, veal and seafood. The interior is as fresh as the menu, with simple table settings, sheer white curtains and stark chestnut columns that lend an understated elegance to the exposed brick walls. For the less adventurous, Le Castagne still offers the simply delicious standards that Italy is known for. But try something new. It has never been easier for Philadelphians to dine in Milan. |
